bleep-bloop: “How to Write Good”

  1. Avoid alliteration. Always. [Sew Lol.]
  2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with. [Except for it’s fine.]
  3. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They’re old hat.) [Nonsense]
  4. Employ the vernacular. [Nonsense]
  5. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc. [No one uses ampersand anyway.]
  6. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary. [In every situation, right?]
  7. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive. [Why?]
  8. Contractions aren’t necessary. [But they are good.]
  9. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos. [Nonsense
  10. One should never generalize. [Why shouldn’t one?]
  11. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: “I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.” [A lot of the time, quotable people know better.]
  12. Comparisons are as bad as cliches. [Comparisons help people understand & are an important part in ‘Writing good’. ]*
  13. Don’t be redundant; don’t use more words than necessary; it’s highly superfluous. [(Call the department!)]
  14. Profanity sucks. [Unless it’s in a QUOTATION! SEW LOL.]
  15. Be more or less specific. [Hi-hi-hi.]
  16. Understatement is always best. [I love how these tumblr people can never explain anything.]
  17. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement. [*This works here too.]
  18. One-word sentences? Eliminate. [Why?]
  19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake. [Nonsense.]
  20. The passive voice is to be avoided. [(Sew Lol I know language terms & picked some & said they are wrong.)]
  21. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms. [Nonsense]
  22. Even if a mixed metaphor stings, it should be derailed. [(See #20)]
  23. Who needs rhetorical questions? [Who ever said ‘writing good’ was about necessity?]
